Lake stared
at the body lying on the floor then she saw a knife in her hand with blood
dripping from it and then it dawned on her what she had done. She released her
grip and she heard a faint sound as the knife hit the floor.
Lake washed
her hands of the blood then walked outside for fresh air; she stared absently
at the sunlight glittering on the glass-like surface of the pool. Spring was
only a few days away and usually Lake loved the spring but now she was all
nerves.
She suddenly found that she was talking to herself, "Shit, shit...No it was in self defense, right? After all, the guy was trying to force himself on me. How stupid was I to think just because I have a boyfriend that this wouldn’t happen to me."
The phone
rang and when she saw the ID it showed Chris. Should she answer the phone and
tell her boyfriend everything or keep quiet? She declined to answer and put the
phone back in her pocket.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door and she jumped. She glanced at the body and then
back at the door. How did anyone know she was here? Her thoughts were like her
voice when she again looked at him lying there, ‘This guy told everyone where
we were going to meet. I wish he was alive now so I could kill the bastard
again.’ Lake then kicked the body and as calmly as she could asked, “Who is
it?” getting closer to the door.
“Babes, it’s me. I know you’re with that guy.” Lake paused for a moment. “Chris, I got rid of him so I’ll be home soon.” Lake said through the door.
Chris now yelled through the door, “I don’t believe you; I want to tear him limb from limb. Now open the fucking door! Or do I bash it in?”
Lake
reluctantly opened the door as she felt she had no choice and stepped back
waiting for his reaction.
He saw the
body lying in a pool of blood, the knife right beside it. He looked at
the body for what seemed to be ages then turned his attention back to Lake. “Did
you do this?”
Lake looked
at Chris then replied in a scared tone, “Yes but he tried...” Chris wouldn’t
let her finish, he grabbed her forcing her into the wall kissing her with passion like never before and then calmly voiced, “I’m so turned on by you
right now. Let’s make love.” He tore the bloody covered clothes off from her
body.
She listened
to the raspy voice on the phone and couldn’t help but to gnaw her nail down to
nothing while the guy tried to calm her down. “No Chris, this is wrong.” She
argued in a harsh whisper, her eyes darting around the sparsely furnished room.
“Baby, tell me how this is wrong? The old man is a crook; we’ll be doing people favours. Listen, don’t you think it’s our turn to live on Easy Street?”
“Yes but…”
“But what Lake? You say you love me, so do me this one little favour. You’ll be coming out of this with your hands clean, all I’m asking is that you marry the geezer. So far things have been going fine. Besides remember last year when I helped you clean up your mess? ”
“Chris, if
he’s alive today and dead tomorrow, the first person the police will arrest is
his wife.”
“Sweetheart, don’t you trust me?” Chris cooed on the phone, “Come on, tell me you love me.”
Lake sighed; she was such a sucker for a few sweet words. “I love you Chris, and I trust you,” But she wasn’t stupid, “If anything goes wrong, you’ll be as dead as a doornail and you know I can have that done from behind bars.”
Chris
laughed, the reason he loved Lake is because of her feistiness, she kept
him grounded. “I know you will. Look baby, I won’t contact you again until this
is done. I’ll miss you.”
“I’ll miss you too.” Chris disconnected, Lake stared at the phone in her hand, what was she doing? When
Chris first
told her his plan she laughed and told him he was crazy, but he had managed to
convince her that nothing would go wrong, and that they deserved have an easier
life, now she was in way to deep, she talked a big talk but the truth of the
matter was she wished she wouldn't have to follow through.
A big thanks to Aussie Karima for helping put the blood on Lake’s clothes. You rock!
